Focus on Heart Health in February

By Pam Gennings, Executive Director Special Projects

heartCardiovascular disease (CVD) – including heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure is the number 1 killer of women and men in the United States. CVD is a leading cause of disability, and heart disease is a major threat to senior health. Everyday Health reports that 84 percent of people age 65 years and older die from heart disease.

Help prevent cardiovascular disease by adopting healthy habits and managing risk factors like:

  • Diet
  • Physical Activity
  • Tobacco use
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Diabetes

To help you succeed, remember:

  • Don’t get discouraged – every healthy choice makes a difference.
  • Ask family and friends to join you – partner up!
  • Reward yourself. Try healthy dessert recipes, take a walk with friends, find fun things to do.

Ben Franklin left us with great advice, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Steps to Heart Disease Prevention

  • Get a regular check up from a health care professional. Know your numbers!
High Blood Pressure often has no symptoms – check it on a regular basis.
  • Take your medicine.
  • Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Limit saturated fats and foods containing cholesterol like fatty meats.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Limit alcohol use.
  • Minimize stress in your life.
